Maine, Vermont and New Hampshire were named among the states with the least diversity in the country in a new study by WalletHub that compared factors of socioeconomic, cultural, economic, household, religious and political diversity.
“The U.S. population reflects a mix of not just races and ethnicities but also cultures, religions, economic statuses, educational backgrounds and other characteristics. These groups come together in everyday life, influencing and experiencing one another,” the website read. “However, some elements of society aren’t as diverse as others. For example, there are only 41 women among the CEOs of fortune 500 companies, and around 84 percent of those companies’ board members are white (including men and women).”
The research hoped to find where idea and identity exchanges occur at the highest level.
Connecticut was named the most diverse state in New England, coming in at 14. Massachusetts and Rhode Island followed at 19 and 22, respectively.
Massachusetts ranked 1 in socioeconomic diversity, 19 in cultural diversity, 50 in economic diversity, 23 in household diversity, 33 in religious diversity and 2 in political diversity.
The commonwealth’s low economic diversity could be due to the fact the state scored the lowest in industry and occupational diversity.
The most overall diverse states in the country, according to WalletHub are California, Texas, Hawaii, New Jersey and New York. The states with the least overall diversity are West Virginia, Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire and Montana.
Some of the key stats of the research, according to WalletHub, include:
- Hawaii has the highest racial and ethnic diversity, which is 3.1 times higher than in Maine, the state with the lowest.
- California has the highest language diversity, which is 2.3 times higher than in West Virginia, the state with the lowest.
- Nevada has the highest birthplace diversity, which is three times higher than in Louisiana, the state with the lowest.
- North Dakota has the highest religious diversity, which is two times higher than in Maine, the state with the lowest.
